Basically the open-source firmware unlocks features that the DIGIC processor is capable of but that are locked for the end-user by Canon’s firmware. This includes: RAW file format, live histogram display, a battery readout, and the ability to run scripted actions on a camera. The firmware update is loaded from the SD card and as such doesn’t harm the original firmware. So no warranty void problems.
Read all about it on Wired and find the build for your camera on the CHDK Wiki.
Off course frustrated as I’ve been by the limitation of bracketing on my Canon S2, I immediately started experimenting to make full spherical hdri environments to use in 3D apps. So far i’m making good progress. Stay tuned, there’s a free high-res hdri spherical skydome on it’s way ;)
